The many advices showered on the president-elect reminded me of a story of a Restaurateur. The story was related by the great Sufi-Idries Shah in his passage of ” Beginning to Begin” from his Book of ” learning how to learn”-1978 [the way of the Sufi]

There was once a man- the story related, who opened a restaurant with a good kitchen, attractive tables and an excellent menu.

One of his friends came along soon afterwards, and said: why have you not got a sign like all the other eating places? I suggest you put on it- FINEST FOOD RESTAURANT. When the sign was painted and put up another enquirer asked: you have to be more specific-you might mean any old Restaurant. Add the words “SERVED HERE” and your sign will be complete.

The owner thought it was a good idea and he had the sign board duly altered!

Not long after words some one else came along and said: Why did you put “HERE”? surly any one can see where the place is?

So the restaurateur had the sign changed!

A further curious member of the public wanted to know: ‘Do you not know that the word ” SERVED” is redundant? Because all restaurants and shops serve. Why not take it out? So that word was taken out. It did not stop there.

Another visitor suggested ‘If you continue to use the phrase ” FINEST FOOD”, some people will be sure to wonder whether it really is the finest food and some will not agree. To guard against criticism and contention, please do remove the word ” FINEST” and so the restaurateur did!

Now, just the word “FOOD” was to be seen on the notice.

A sixth inquisitive (advice provider) put his head through the door way. ” Why have you got the word ” FOOD” on your restaurant?

Any one can see that you serve food here.So the restaurateur took down the SIGN!

As he did so he could not help wondering, when some body who was hungry rather than curious or intellectual could come along!” The man seemed tired of conflicting suggestions!

The author may add on his own advice to the president elect, and it is this:

When listened all ‘put your trust on Allah and move on with what you think is best for the country whether popular or unpopular’

The end
